4160 Tuesdays Tokyo Spring Blossom 50ml eau de parfum

Tokyo Spring Blossom is one of 4160Tuesdays' earliest fragrances, first made in 2011 for a charity fundraising event in a tiny Tokyo cafe. We made it for our friend Urura, whose name means "the breeze through spring blossom". It is one of those fragrances which is so unusual that people have to spend a while deciding whether they adore it or are afraid of it. It is made with no musks, no Hedione and no Iso E Super, which means that it exists in a parallel reality to most modern perfumes. Instead, it is built around oppoponax, cabrueva and tolu, with soft violetty ionones, with pink peppercorn, rose, tangerine, geranium and grapfruit, with Ambrox and raspberry leafe absolute at the base. Imagine the breeze through spring blossom, but in another universe.

The Sexist Scent on the Planet. Ever. (IMHO) was never intended to launch on its own. We made it for a private event to make natural gin botanicals wearable (most natural are way too dangerous to put directly on the skin). It was specially designed to be smooth, unassuming, quiet, sensual and to stay close. One VIP guest declared it, “the sexiest scent ever!” and so it came to be named. IMHO stands for in my humble opinion, always meant ironically. The Sexiest Scent on the Planet Ever (IMHO) - after the first waft of lemon meringue pie-like lickability - settled down to a soft woody amber and has very low sillage, on purpose. You have to get up close to smell it. This is a good thing.

Take Me To The River is inspired by the song of the same name; the perfect cover is Talking Heads' live 1980 version. It’s made with three accords: irresponsible irresistible temptation, which is mostly musks; wine and roses, with cognac essential oil, rose absolute, some fruitiness and spices, then one which Sarah named The Armchair: the aroma of a well-used, worn leather armchair that smells of tobacco and layers of beeswax polish, a chair that's just about large enough to hold two people who would like to become better acquainted. Take Me To The River is the fragrance to wear if you’d like something interesting to happen.

Sleep Knot is a soothing come-hither scent, featuring four of eastern tradition’s aphrodisiac aromas: sandalwood, jasmine, ylang ylang and black pepper. Perfumer Sarah McCartney first made it for a Valentines Day event as a pillow mist, but it was far too beautiful to restrict to hotel bedding when it can be worn on your skin. Jasmine absolute is described in Indian literature as calming and seductive: ylang ylang is named “the oil of tranquillity” and black pepper is traditionally used as a stimulant. Together, you have a beautifully sensual spiced white floral.

Shazam! evokes the aroma of the Marrakesh Medina. It first existed only as fiction, in Sarah's perfume-inspired novel, The Scent of Possibility, then she decided to bring it to life to remind her of wandering around the ancient streets of the spice soukh.
At its heart is a19th Century style classic amber base: dark labdanum balsam and soft vanillin. Then we stir in a whole spice market: frankincense, patchouli, pink pepper, juniper berries, basil, cedar, cardamon and cocoa. As our imaginations take us swooping low over the bustling square, Jemaa el-Fnaa, we get a burst of freshly squeezed oranges.

Rosa Ribes (rhymes with Ebays) is a rose blackcurrant chypre fragrance, the result of Sarah's continuing obsessions with Ribena and all things curranty. There are blackcurrant bushes in her tiny garden, and raspberry canes too. It's the balance of rose and fruit with its chypre heart that makes it her absolute favourite. The chypre is made with a drop of oakmoss absolute, bergamot, opoponax and patchouli, although the perfumery masterplan is that they're blended so that you can't distinguish them; they just become one smooth fragrant cloud.
